Summer Worship
It's June already! Wow! Just a week or so and school will be out! Wow! Then it's summer vacation, family trips, summer camps, picnics, BBQs, pool parties. Wow! I can't wait!
It is also a time when our worship style changes … rather dramatically. So, for you newcomers, you are in for a pleasant surprise (at least I hope so). Our summer worship schedule is much more relaxed (how can we be more relaxed you ask?). There is more singing (and you get to choose the hymns - from the regular blue hymnal, the new blue hymnal supplement AND the old green and blue supplements from previous years), less liturgy, and we do the sermons Phil Donohue style. Which means that your participation (all voluntary, of course) is a big part of our service.
A couple of years ago our summer sermon series was on the book of Genesis, last year it featured characters from the Old Testament. And this year we are going to be looking at … (drum roll please) … "The Ten Commandments." For the thirteen weeks of summer we will be looking at the Ten Commandments, one at a time. You will be surprised what nuggets are hidden in each of those commandments and how relevant they are to our lives for today.
For those of you who are proficient at math you might be thinking "10 Commandments, 13 weeks of summer … that doesn't compute." But never fear. The first Sunday (June 13th) will be a general introduction and the final Sunday (September 6th) will be on the two Great Commandments from the New Testament. In between we will have one Sunday that will ask you to come and share "the commandment that didn't make the top 10 that you wished had." Plans are still being formulated - so watch your bulletins. I promise it won't be boring!
And then don't forget "Worship at the Beach!" Each year (usually in July) we have at least one of our worship services down at Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz. That is a wild and crazy time filled with the spirit and the unexpected. Who could forget Chris from last year! We follow our service with a potluck.
This summer is going to be a blast! Even though school may be out and those lazy days of summer may be upon us - don't forget to come and join us on Sunday mornings. Come and catch the "fever" and join the party! We will be here. I hope you will too.
Be blessed, and I'll see you on Sunday.
