The Honeymoon Phase
Welcome to 2005! Yippee! 2004 was great and 2005 is going to be even better. It is amazing to me that when people ask me how I am doing here at Santa Teresa Hills Presbyterian Church - after three plus years - I can tell them I still feel like I am in the "Honeymoon Phase." And it's really true. I am even happier and more excited about being a part of this church family than I was when I came to San Jose in December of 2001 - and I was really, really excited then.
I don't think I am being Pollyanna about this whole thing … well, maybe a little. But I thank God everyday for the privilege of coming to church each day (except Monday J). I love our faith community. I love how everyone just rolls up their sleeves and gets to work. I love how I had the opportunity to baptize FIVE babies this past year … and most didn't even cry.
I love working with a remarkably talented and caring staff of people who give 150% (and that's a miracle because, in reality, you can't ever give more than 100%). Our church staff (Jay Hartley, Dave Robertson, Marylyn Goode, and Libby Souter) make my job easy.
I love the leadership and independence of a Session filled with men and women who care about what they do and are willing to go the extra mile. I love how they don't rubber stamp my ideas and proposals and occasionally even overrule me - in a kind and loving way. That's the sign of a healthy leadership team. I love the Deacons who care for you all.
I love the wonderfully talented music program that lets ME sing … albiet in the very back. I truly enjoy the music of this church and all that it adds to our worship experience.
I love the kids who never fail to bring a smile to my face during the Children's Time and the way their spirits uplift mine. I love the members of this church who are supportive, caring, and loving not only of me, but especially of one another. And I love how the number one comment from visitors about our church is not the minister or the church building or even our gifted music program … but how welcoming and friendly you all are. So I guess it must be true - we are a warm, loving, and friendly family.
How could I not still be in the Honeymoon Phase? It is because of you … each of you. Each of you bring a story, a spirit, an energy to this church. Each of you are important. Each of you deserve my best. I love this place!
This new year is going to be exciting, dynamic, and energizing. I am glad we get to experience it together. And may the honeymoon continue!
As always, I'll see you on Sunday!
