“And the Angels Were
Silent”
I have two
important topics to discuss with you this month. First, can you believe that Lent starts this
week? I can’t either. Boy, I think this is the earliest start to
Lent that I can remember! Anyway, mark
your calendars: Ash Wednesday, February 6th, marks the first day of
Lent. As always we will have a special
reflective worship service in the Sanctuary that night at 7:30 p.m. I hope
you will be able to join us.
And then, on
each succeeding Wednesday evening (February 13th, 20th,
and 27th and March 5th and 12th), from 7:00 p.m. till 8:30
p.m., I will be leading a Lenten book study by Max Lucado entitled:
“And the Angels were Silent – Walking
with Christ Toward the Cross.”
We’ve used books by Max Lucado
before and it has always been spiritually enriching, lively, and
provocative. We will be meeting in the Amber
Room. I have placed an initial order of ten books
and I think they will cost no more than around $6.00 a piece. They are also available at Berean’s for
$14.99 new and online at various places used for about half of that.
So what can
you expect on Wednesday nights? Well the
publishers say this about Lucado’s book:
In
the last week of his life, Jesus deliberately sets his face toward Jerusalem – and certain death. This is no ordinary week. Even the angels are silent as they ponder the
final days of Jesus Christ.
This is no ordinary walk. Jesus doesn’t chatter. He doesn’t pause. He
is on his final journey. He walks determinedly to the holy city, angrily into
the temple, wearily into Gethsemane, painfully up the Via Dolorosa. And
powerfully out of the vacated tomb.
We are
invited to follow Jesus on his final journey. It will be a journey we will
never forget. I hope you’ll make this
book study one of your Lenten disciplines.
I promise you won’t go home disappointed.

Holy Week in my next Coop’s Corner.
The other point of information that
I want to share with you is about the first Sunday in March when we will cancel
our regularly scheduled morning worship service. That’s right – CANCEL
CHURCH! How can this be??? Well, if you were around last year you’d know
that that is the Sunday reserved for FAITH IN ACTION. Faith
in Action is where the entire congregation signs up and participates in
service projects instead of coming to church for that one Sunday. We will have a variety of activities for you
to choose from. Look for sign-up sheets
around the middle of the month.
Once we have
completed our mission projects and had a chance to rest a bit, we will
reconvene at the church at 7:00 p.m.
It is then that we will join San Jose Young Nak and New Life churches (the
other two congregations that use our facility and who also will have
participated in our service projects) for a joint celebration and worship
experience. All three pastors will
participate. Last year it was one of the
best worship services of the year. The
energy and spirit were through the roof.
So, now you
have a lot of dates to put on your calendar!
It is going to be fantastic! Be
blessed, my friends. Smile and laugh and
enjoy life.
And as
always, I’ll see you on Sunday…
Pastor Tom
